About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Humbling Game
I am by no means a pro but from the first hole I knew this would be a challenge, and it does not let up. Very difficult the first time as the dog legs and hills prohibit the view of the green and quite a few holes. I started with 10 balls, left luckily with one. If you drive into the desert on either side of the fairway, kiss the ball goodbye. Excellent, challenging round. The only disappointment was that the facilities on the back nine weren't as clean as I would have expected.
Beautiul, challenging Course
I've played this course many times over the years. It's back in excellent condition and always fun to play.
Lots of wildlife - saw jackrabbits, deer, desert bunnies, rattlesnake, road runners, bobcat & lots of birds this round. Very scenic - it's neighbor is the renowned Stone Canyon private enclave and course.
This is NOT a beginners course. If you cannot drive the ball the at least 150 yards, you will be frustrated. Many holes have long carries from the tee box to the fairway over rough desert. If you go searching for a ball, use extreme caution - there is lots of wildlife living here.
Also, if you do not have a course map or app on your phone, get one. (I use the free version of Swing by Swing on my iPhone) it will be frustrating, as there are many blind shots. Knowledge of the holes is key on the course.
Having said the above, the positives far outweigh the challenges. This course is a joy to play - I love it. I am a 19 HCP and can drive the ball about 200 yds. I've played all the course in Tucson and I keep coming back to this one - it's one of my top 5 favorites.
Very attractive facility - the back patio of the clubhouse is a great place to relax after a round, have a drink and watch golfers play the 9th hole.
It is in the northeast section of Tucson (Oro Valley) which is a very nice part of town. Mostly upscale residential homes with many gated communities scattered around.
I highly recommend this course!
Disappointed - Course is not for average golfer
Most drives are all carry over desert. Carryovers in fairways are not marked and quite a surprise. I guess they want you to buy the $8.00 book so you know where you are going. Our Range Finder picked up various distances. So it was a guessing game for club selection. Very poorly marked course for someone who has never golfed here. Conditions were great. Round very frustrating for a lady golfer who has golfed over 20 years and is a 26 handicap who does not hit long drives. Slow up play looking for balls. Course is for Advance golfers.
Won't come here again. Staff was great! Nice facility.
A quality test
This course throws everything at you in one round! If I lived closer, I could play it every day!
Conditions were excellent, lots of different shots were required from the tips and it was a challenge all day.
I would recommend to anyone, and as a 2.5 index, it was a great challenge at 6900+ and 145 slope... Awesome!
Pleasantly surpised
The course was in great condition. The greens were great, the fairways were wonderful, the rough was reasonably cut and fair. Bunkers were nice. The typography was conducive to the rating. Saw some wildlife, and although the course is built around residential housing they don't come into play at all. Beautiful scenery thoughout. I would recommend this course and look forward to playing again.
Great track
The course was in great shape and landscaped nicely into the desert.
Course is getting better
The course has gotten better after OB took over. I hope they continue the positive improvement. Look forward to playing again.
Challenging Course
Extremely challenging course. Greens and fairways were well maintained. Not a good course for beginners or high handicappers as you need 200+ drives on many holes just to clear the Desssert terrain and get to the fairways. I would definetely recommedn to anyone who is a sub 20 handicapper who likes to be challenged. Several holes require you to hit spot areas in order to have a decent next shot or shot at the green.
The club has undergone a recent ownership and management change and I was glad to see the condition of the course has shown good improvemntg over waht I had heard form other reports in recent months. The greens and fairways were well maintained and the staff was very friendly. I would defintely recommend the course with the caveats that I have mentioned above. I did not have the opportunity to try out the restaurant as I had a late tee time so, could not comment on the quality of the food or the service staff. However, the straff in the pro shop and others were very cordial and knowledgable. Again, this is positive as opposed to other reports that I had previously heard. Again, overall impressions were very positive in refernce tto course condition and maintenance, ewspecially realted to other courses that I have played in the area.
great layout
wow great from tee to green well maintained on all levels even the views make you stop and take a soak it in
Finally the course is in good condition
Be sure to bring a wet towel; there are no ball washers on the course!! Not not he cart either and no one told us...
Fun golf
Choose the correct tee box/length and you will have fun. Set in a thicker vegetation desert the fairways are plenty wide to play. The forced carries are more visual deception than penalty unless you just are not getting it in the air. 4-5 blind shots are just enough for interest. The staff was apologizing for last years course conditions but conditions were good not immaculate. The fee reflects this. Solid value. Try it. A better changing area at the clubhouse would have been great for us heading to the airport. Bunker drainage needs work in spots.
awesome
Course was in great shape!! Only complaint for the first time player is no idea where to hit the ball, other than that had a great time!!
Much Improved!
Much better than the last time I was here a year ago. They have done what it takes to get the course back in shape after the takeover! A little over watered, making the fring tough to figure out with the greens so fast, the ball would either get hung up on the fring, or roll off the hard green. Almost not fun...
outstanding course!!!
this is one of the best courses my wife and I have played in Tucson. the staff is incredibly friendly and let us move our time back a day to avoid cold weather.
Course is challenging with the forced carries but fair and reachable. 17 is just a bear.
Get your Ducks in a row!
Showed up early for a 12:30 PM tee time. Checked in. Asked if I could get off early. Staff said check with starter. Checked with starter, he said he could get me out about 11AM. I said that's better than 12:30 and thanked him. I go out to practice green to putt a few. Starter comes out and says that course policy is everyone must use tee time assigned. I asked "even if you have a twosome or threesome going out". He said yes. I asked "Why?" He didn't answer. I asked "Why?" again. He said "New owners". I tried to continue with my putting but just got too hot under the collar to stay.
Went back to talk to staff at pro shop and they just gave me the reservist salute. I'll never playing there again. You enjoy!!
Play the correct tees
Lots of forced carries. Play the correct tees and you will have a ball. Play the wrong tees and you will NEED lots of balls.
Don't play the back tees unless you are a solid 5. Don't play the gold tees unless you are less than a 10. If you THINK you are a 10, play the silver tees and have fun.
Keep it straight even if have to use a 3 wood.
Very nice desert style course
I really enjoyed the round. I was paired with three other singles, all of whom were very familiar with the layout, so I received lots of course knowledge along the way. Bag handler gave me a yardage book, too, so that helped. Course is in great condition. Tee boxes were very level, which I appreciate. Several holes feature target golf yardages, so driver off the tee is not always recommended. There are several holes with forced carries, but none seemed too long. Greens were fast but not too fast. Bunkers were a little thin on sand, so my wedge just skipped through. Pretty average for the area. I look forward to playing here again.
Vistoso Golf Club
This course is challenging in the fact that you can see very few flags from the Tee. This made it difficult to determine club selection and shot placement from the
Tee for a first timer. This course is in excellent shape and I would highly recommend playing it.
Challenging course
I wish the restaurant would be open after 5pm. We would like to have dinner after golf, but it has never been open!
Disgusting Customer Service
Absolutely horrible customer service. Way over priced. Would never play this course again and highly suggest that no one should play this course. Why be subjected to owners/management who care nothing about you the golf consumer.
